Singworks Research
Date: 01 August 2003 - 01 February 2004
Research has been Singworks’ major focus for much of its first year. Because the long-term future of singing in Worcestershire is so important to us, we felt it was important to learn about what singing activities are currently available to young people and the numbers of young people who participate in them. This has helped us to learn about types of singing activities that young people particularly enjoy and identify both geographical and stylistic gaps in provision. We have also been able to find out more about the needs of leaders who work with young singers, and design a programme of work that helps support what is currently taking place.
Our ‘Choral Audit’ explored current opportunities for singing together that exist for young people in and outside school. We sent a questionnaire to every Local Authority school in Worcestershire, and received a very encouraging number of replies. We also visited and spoke with a large number people who run out-of-school singing activities for young people. The results of this research showed that, although there are many enthusiastic young singers in the county, and several adults committed to providing opportunities for them to sing together, there is still plenty for Singworks to do. We are finding ways to raise aspirations by increasing young people’s chances to hear high-quality singing together, exploring ways to give singing’s image a ‘makeover’, and encourage teenagers to continue singing. We are also working with local partners to look into ways to involve more boys in singing activities. If you would like to know more about the findings of our research, please contact us.
