1-to-1: Summer Songwriting
Date: 06 - 23 July 2004 Location: Bishop Perowne High School, Worcester
In Singworks’ first major project, supported by Youth Music, young people aged 14 – 18 spent a week in their summer holidays working with a professional singer, lyricist and songwriter to write lyrics and music for their own songs and get them ready for a dramatised performance.
The project, called 1-to-1, took place at Bishop Perowne High School, Worcester. It was inspired by a performance of the Fourth Book of Madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi. It all began on 6th July 2004, when vocal ensemble I Fagiolini introduced the project to young people at the school with a dramatised performance of the music (entitled The Full Monteverdi). Many of the young people who attended I Fagiolini’s performance decided to take part in the project, which ran from 19th to 23rd July. Poet Clare Pollard, composer Matthew Osgood and singer Kate Mapp helped the participants compose and perform songs in more modern musical styles, reflecting the theme of Monteverdi’s own music: the break-up of a romantic relationship.
Many friends and family members attended the performance at the end of the week, and all the participants received a recording of the concert on CD. The project was a tremendous success. The participants learned a considerable amount about songwriting and singing. Just under half the young people were not members of a choir or singing group, and had a valuable opportunity to experience singing by themselves and with others. The participants thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the project, from the vocal warm-ups and poetry workshops to composing and performing catchy new tunes. One participant wrote “thanks to you all for giving me this opportunity - it was really great”. Follow-up activities are planned for the Autumn and Spring.
