Playground songs and games
Date: 21 April 2006 A project helping children to become young singing leaders
Children from four schools across Worcestershire had the opportunity to develop skills in leading singing during Singworks’ Playground Songs and Games project, supported by Worcestershire Arts Education. During the summer term, specially selected groups of children from Lickey End First School, St Luke’s First School (Redditch), Northleigh Primary School and Stanley Road Primary School (Worcester) learnt a wide range of playground songs and games through workshops led by professional singing leaders. Once they had learnt the songs and games, the children were given the task of teaching them to other children during playtimes. The participants in the project each were given a badge indicating that s/he is a ‘young singing leader’. The young singing leaders were given specially made stickers to give out to all the other children who participated in the playtime singing games. Children develop a number of important skills through playing musical games together. These include finding their voices, a sense of pulse, co-ordination, listening, memory, and playing co-operatively, constructively and healthily. Participating in singing games during playtime helps inspire an enjoyment of singing which gives children a positive outlook on singing in the classroom. This project helped the young singing leaders to establish a vibrant and long-lasting singing culture throughout their school. Singworks monitored the outcomes of the project in each school and proving successful, aims to extend the project to additional schools in future years.
