Leading Young Voices
Date: 28 - 30 May 2007 Time: 5.00pm Friday 9 February – 12.00pm Sunday 11 February 2007 Location: Farncombe Estate, Broadway, Worcestershire A residential weekend course for people who wish to develop skills in
This course (rescheduled as a result of the snow in February) provided an opportunity for people to learn about leading singing with young people. It was ideal for primary school music co-ordinators, music teachers and community musicians interested in extending their skills. It was led by Carol Green and Jon Payne, two choral conductors who specialise in working with young voices.
During the course, we sometimes worked together in one group and also split into smaller groups to look at different topics in more depth. The course covered working with different age groups: Early Years, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and more advanced singers. It explored the skills and concepts required to develop young voices, teach general musicianship and work towards giving expressive performances. Participants had the chance to learn a wide range of songs and other musical games and activities. Each participant received a pack of information, music and teaching ideas to take away.
The course was linked to the Worcestershire Young Voices programme, which, over the following year, aimed to establish clusters of singing groups at Area Music Centres in Malvern, Redditch and Bromsgrove. Some participants were given the chance to lead singing groups in the Worcestershire Young Voices programme, but we welcomed participants who were not directly involved in the programme, who would also find it very beneficial.
The course was supported by Worcestershire Youth Music and the National Foundation for Youth Music and was run in partnership with Singworks and MusicLeader West Midlands.
The course fee was £100. Participants were entitled to attend two top-up training days, one in May 2007 and the other in Autumn 2007 for no additional fee.
The course took place in the picturesque setting of the Farncombe Estate, Broadway, Worcestershire (for details see www.cotswoldconferencecentre.co.uk). Meals and accommodation in ensuite single bedrooms were included in the course fee.
Places were limited, and early booking was recommended.
