Worcestershire Waits
Date: 26 2007 - 26 September 2010 Time: Thursday evenings during school term times. Location: Blessed Edward Oldcorne College, Timberdine Road, Worcester. An opportunity for young instrumentalists and singers aged 10–18 to explore the exciting sounds of music from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century.
What are Waits? In the Middle Ages, many European towns and cities had bands that played music (often very loudly) for important occasions. In England, these bands were called Waits and some bands survived into the nineteenth century.
What is Worcestershire Waits? Worcestershire Waits is a music group for young people that gives them the opportunity to learn and perform a wide range of historical music, from medieval dance music to 18th-century sonatas, using both instruments and voices. This type of music is usually called Early Music.
It begins on 4 October 2007. Times are as follows: Group 1: 4.00 – 5.30 Group 2: 5.00 – 6.30 Groups 1 and 2 will have a half-hour session between 5pm and 5.30pm when they play and sing together.
Who is it for? Worcestershire Waits is for young people aged 10 to 18. Anyone can join, whether interested in singing or playing a musical instrument, or both. There will be two groups, one group for people who have not been learning to play their instrument very long (approximately grades 2–3) and one for more experienced musicians (grades 4–8 and above). Members do not have to have taken any exams to join the groups. The groups are ideal for young people who would like the challenge of playing and singing in small groups, often with only one or two instruments on each part.
Who will lead the sessions and what will they be like? Worcestershire Waits will be led by teachers who specialise in Early Music. They will use their knowledge of this type of music to help members play and sing in styles that might have been used by the music’s original performers. Some members will have the chance to try musical instruments from the past, such as viols or shawms. Members don’t need to know anything about Early Music to join the group. The leaders will help you prepare for performances. We will perform at least once per term. The first performance will be in Worcester in December and will feature historical Christmas music.
