Notes and Ropes: Playground Songs and Games Project
Date: 01 September 2007 - 01 July 2008 Time: Spring term 2008 Location: Schools in Wychavon An exciting project helping children to develop singing and other musical and social skills through participating in playground songs and games.
Singworks received financial support from Sing Up to run a project helping children to develop singing and other musical and social skills through participating in playground songs and games. Singing games give children the chance to enjoy singing though play and we hope that the skills that they develop in the playground can also be transferred to more formal classroom learning. Sing Up is the Music Manifesto National Singing Programme, produced by Youth Music, The Sage Gateshead, AMV-BBDO, and Faber Music, supported by Government.
During the project, a professional musician made five 1-hour visits to the participating schools over the Spring term to teach a repertoire of playground songs and games to approximately 30 children in Years 3 and 4. These children were given the responsibility to share the games they learned with their peers and with younger children during playtimes. We recognised the achievement of these children by giving them badges.
We also led a 2-hour training session for two teachers and/or lunchtime supervisors from each school. During this session we taught participants many of the playground songs and games we are using during the project and gave them ideas about how to help children play the games themselves.
