Melody Monkey’s Marvellous Music Box Project in Wychavon

Date: 01 October 2006 - 01 July 2007
Time: Spring/Summer Terms 2007
Location: Wychavon

Melody Monkey’s Marvellous Music Box contains songs and games, stories, musical instruments and puppets. The activities in the box help children to find their singing voices, develop musical skills and foster an enthusiasm for music. The songs, games and stories help children develop listening, co-ordination, language and number skills, as well as encouraging turn-taking and positive social interaction.

All the material in the box can be used by early years practitioners with no formal musical training; the training programme gave participants a chance to explore the resources in the box and help to lead sessions. The training was suitable for anyone, whether or not they had any previous experience. To participate in the training, participants did’t need to be:
• A music teacher
• Able to read music
• A really good singer
• Overflowing with confidence
But did need to be:
• Enthusiastic about making music with Early Years
• Willing to join in and have a go
• Prepared to respect and encourage fellow trainees
During the project we learnt the songs in the box, explored ways to use the instruments, and thought about how the puppets can help children develop musical skills. We explored ways to teach songs to children, and discuss good practice in leading a session. We hoped the participants would find the training a lot of fun, and develop the confidence to lead your own music-making sessions.

During this project, each Early Years group involved in this project received:
• Melody Monkey’s Marvellous Music Box (worth £185) to keep
• Training on making music with Early Years children
• Eight music-making sessions led jointly by a professional music leader and representatives from your group

Each group involved in the project was expected to:
• Make a contribution of £30 towards project costs
• Nominate two trainees, who will attend the three training sessions and work with the music leader during the music-making sessions
• Communicate with the Project Manager and music leader to arrange dates and times for sessions
• Support the trainees and the music leader by making time for the project during the Spring term 2007
